The natural grandeur of Cubbon Park provided the proper backdrop for artists of Venkatappa Art Gallery forum (VAG) to appreciate sculptures and their artistry on Sunday . Beginning 10.30am, the forum organized a `sculpture walk’ to “generate awareness about sculpture work at Cubbon Park done by 15odd artists from across the state“.The VAG forum came into being during protests by local artists against the government’s move to hand over the gallery to a private entity. Sixty artists went around each of the sculptures carved out of fallen trees in Cubbon Park and spoke about the work of individual sculptors. The artists went up to Vidhana Soudha and made their way back to the sculptures dotting the verdant space.

A cake-cutting ceremony to celebrate the art gallery’s 41st anniversary (April 13) also marked the occasion. Noted artist John Devraj played songs about saving the tiger popula tion in Karnataka. A large number of visitors who had come to the park for some fresh air got a chance to hear about the art of sculpting and engage with artists.

“The forum doesn’t only exist to organize demonstrations and protests but also to spread awareness about art. Today, we wanted to do this sculpture walk to appreciate the work by our artist-friends and to interact with the crowd,“ said artist Suresh Kumar G.

“We are here to celebrate the 41st anniversary of the art gallery as well as interact with people and tell them about sculpture art. It’s great to see people taking interest in the work of artists and realizing how a beautiful sculpture has been carved out of a fallen tree,“ said Surekha, an artist.

Venkatappa Art Gallery opened on April 13, 1975, as an arts centre during the time of chief minister D Devaraj Ur. Then on, the gallery has witnessed an array of artists and events for 41 years.
